Leadership
and Administration
Kirk Session
As a Presbyterian Church, the leadership of Eglinton is the
responsibility of a group of elders, all elected by the congregation.
In Presbyterian terms, the minister is the ‘teaching’
elder, the others are ‘ruling’ elders. Elections
of additional ‘ruling’ elders are held from time
to time.
Congregational Committee
Elected by the congregation every three years, the Committee
works with Kirk Session, having particular responsibility for
the matters relating to finance, property and church publications.
The Committee members also share district visitation with the
elders .
Literature
Bible Reading Notes, Points For Prayer and Christian Magazines
are available to help and encourage Christian growth and give
an awareness of a Christian viewpoint.
Flower Committee
Arrange flowers in the church each week, often donated by people
in memory of family members. These are distributed each week
to people who are elderly, housebound or ill.
Finance
There is considerable income and expenditure involved in maintaining
the work and witness of Eglinton each year. We need the support
of all our members to ensure the activities of the congregation
and the wider church are maintained. If you are planning to
make Eglinton your church family, then what follows may be of
interest.
The most common way of supporting
the regular work of the church is through Freewill Offering.
The development, maintenance,
repair and decoration of church property is supported through
the Property Maintenance fund.
The main opportunity for contributing
to the wider mission of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland is
through the United Appeal.
To enable regular and planned
support for these funds envelopes are issued annually to all
who are or who wish to be members of the congregation.
If you are a tax payer the most
efficient way to give is by means of Gift Aid. For each £1
you give the church is able to recover around 30p from the Inland
Revenue.
It is also possible to arrange
your giving by means of a Standing Order.
Further details on any of these
matters can be obtained from our Church Treasurer.
“SO
What's a Christian then?”
That's a question that leaves
many confused. We still live in a supposedly "Christian"
country but does that make us all Christians? Is there more
to it than having been baptised, living a decent life and having
a vague belief in God? The Bible has the answer.
At the heart of the Christian
faith is a living relationship with God. The Bible tells us
that becoming a Christian is about finding forgiveness and being
reconciled to God. Through the death and resurrection of his
Son Jesus Christ, God has provided a way out of our isolation.
Our sin need no longer block us off from God, because He himself
has paid the price to deal with the damaging consequences.
Becoming a Christian involves
thanking God for giving us a new start. We must take a conscious
decision to come under God's new management. God is not some
hard hearted asset stripper who might subsequently lay us off.
We really can trust that He knows what's best for our life and
what will bring fulfilment. So we need to move from a life of
total self-reliance to a life of dependence on the living God.
It's tremendously exciting to discover that you can encounter
Jesus for yourself and experience God's fatherly love through
the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Unfortunately, many people still
prefer to leave Jesus out of the equation. He often gets sidelined
while we try to make a go of life on our own. Sadly, managing
our own affairs and living to please ourselves puts us in a
broken relationship with God. A Christian is someone who sees
the problem and recognises that a response must be made to Jesus
laying down his life for us. Saying "Thank you, please
come into my life," repairs the relationship.
Changing the direction of your
life opens the door to discovering the very presence and power
of God. It's thrilling to discover your true identity, to know
how much God values you and to realise that you can be of use
to God in changing his world.
